Update on Soundtrack to Ian Curtis Biopic ‘Control’
Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

As we reported this time last year, David Bowie and several other glam rockers will be featured on the soundtrack of ‘Control’, the upcoming biopic of the life and death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis.  Both of Bowie’s songs will be featured in the movie itself.  Among the artists featured on the soundtrack are Iggy Pop, Roxy Music, New Order, and, of course, Joy Division.  New Order fans will be excited to hear that there are three new New Order instrumentals on the soundtrack - ‘Exit’, ‘Hynopsis’, and ‘Get Out.’  The soundtrack is due out on October 1, 2007 with the films release following four days later on October5, 2007.

New Jareth Action Figure
Sunday, August 26th, 2007

The new Jareth action figure looks to be made for the segment of David Bowie’s fan base that is attracted to men. I present to you Exhibit A:

Really. Check out the package. This toy must be made to attract the male-loving David Bowie fans. Can there be any other reason why a toy maker would put Bowie’s Area so prominently on display? Well, unless the toy maker has a vested interest in the Labyrinth fanfic sites. Too bad they screwed up the hair. If the figure had the trademark fluffy hair instead of those awful dreadlocks I may have become the proud owner of a new Jareth action figure. Ahem.

Buddha of Suburbia To Be Remastered
Saturday, July 28th, 2007

On October 2, Capital/EMI will reissue one of the Webmaster’s and my favorite David Bowie records - Buddha of Suburbia. David Bowie says about the album and recording it, “This album may well have been one of the most enjoyable projects that I have been involved with. My personal memory stock for this album was made up from an almighty plethora of influences and reminiscences from the 1970s.” The album often gets pigeon-holed as merely the soundtrack to the BBC miniseries adaption of Hanif Kureishi’s semi-autobiographical book, but it is a work of art in it’s own right. Follow the link to Earthtimes to read the rest of Bowie’s reminiscence.

American Idol Jeans
Monday, July 23rd, 2007

The Fox network’s ratings juggernaut American Idol has entered into a partnership with Lyric Jeans to release a clothing line inspired by and featuring lyrics from influential musicians.  Musicians whose lyrics will appear on the clothing include David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Marvin Gaye, and The Beatles.  Honestly, I don’t know whether I should rejoice or burst into tears.  I think the clothing line itself is a great idea, but I think American Idol represents so many things wrong with music and pop culture today.  Such a dilemma…

David Bowie Song Featured on Upcoming Kurt Cobain Biopic
Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

A hearty slap on the back from me and the Webmaster if you can guess what the song is! The biopic, entitled “Kurt Cobain: About A Son” is due out late this year.  It will feature some rarely-seen interviews with Kurt and some footage of places that shaped his life.  The soundtrack to the film is due out on September 11 (interesting choice of dates) and will feature songs by artists that influenced his sound and career.  Besides David Bowie, some of the featured artists will be Iggy Pop, REM, and Arlo Guthrie.  Read more on the movie and soundtrack at NME.com.

Review of “Bowie, Bolan, and the Brooklyn Boy”
Thursday, May 31st, 2007

The June issue of Harp Magazine will feature a review of Tony Visconti’s book Bowie, Bolan, and the Brooklyn Boy.  With his book, Visconti aimed to paint a realistic picture of his, Bolan’s, and David Bowie’s lives and experiences.  He also lets the reader into his mind by explaining how some Bowie and T. Rex albums were produced.  Interestingly, Morrissey wrote the forward.  I’m especially curious about what Morrissey has to say since I’ve not heard him say a favorable thing about Bowie in ten years.

More David Bowie Covers - This Time From Poison
Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Looking for a reason to stay relevant enough to tour and make money, Poison is putting out an album of covers.  Needless to say, it will not be nearly as awesome as ‘Pin Ups.’  Anyway, some of the covers on the album are good choices.  The album will include “Suffragette City” by David Bowie, ‘Just What I Needed’ by The Cars, and ‘Dead Flowers’ by the Rolling Stones.  For more information and a bit of promotion, visit MP3.com.
