Musicians Michael and Spider have released the first two songs in their “Diamonds” project. It’s a collection of 10 David Bowie covers. The press release sums it up best:
Yet another dance company has found inspiration in the work of David Bowie. The Michael Clark Company will be touring a new performance this summer that is based on the Seventies-era works of Bowie, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop. Choreographer Michael Clark took particular interest in the work of the artists did during the Seventies since it was a creative time that produced masterpeices from all three working together and separately. The show will premiere on June 25 and 26, 2009 in Venice and tour Europe into 2010.

He directed the video for “King Rat” by Modest Mouse and for the cover of David Bowie’s “Quicksand” by Grace Woodroofe. So far there is no news yet as to exactly when the videos will air, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.

The permanent museum features memorabilia from about 100 artists including David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse, and Pulp. Seven different areas represent 60 years worth of British rock and chronicle the influence that British music has had on fashion and politics. Bowie’s pierrot suit from Ashes to Ashes is displayed in the 1975-1985 section. On display in the Bowie section are Ziggy’s famous Numbers Suit, the suit from David Live, and the Thin White Duke suit from the Station to Station Tour, a few rare posters, the original handwritten lyrics to Five Years and Fame, and a set-list from the Ziggy d days. Total Blam Blam over at Bowienet has written a great piece on his experience at the museum during the preview event. Check it out.
If anyone has been to the exhibit and wishes to send pictures, feel free. We’ll give you credit and post them in the gallery.
Posted in News | 1 Comment »Remember in February when we reported on a rumor that David Bowie was going to have a small part in a movie named Will? It seems that was true…only the movie has been retitled Bandslam. The movie, starring Gaelan Connell, Alyson Michalka, and (unfortunately) Vanessa Hudgens, tells the story of a band formed by high school outcasts and a popular girl in order to win the battle of the bands at their school. Bowie described his cameo as “a ten second scene of absolute silence.” So, it doesn’t sound like the kind of movie I will sit through just for a glimpse of Bowie, but I might check it out from the local library and fast-forward to his scene.
It’s not the first major celebrity cameo I’ve heard of, but it seems rather disconnected – at least with, say, Stan Lee, you could argue that he’s obviously getting cameo roles in Marvel flicks because he’s actually the creator of the characters involved, from Spider-Man to The Fantastic Four. With Bowie, it’s like Mr. T getting a cameo in a film about a partypoker tournament. It’s entertaining enough, but you’re still left wondering exactly what the man was doing in that particular picture.

The latest addition to the ever-growing list of covers, remixes, and mash-ups is Ziggy Stardust Remixed gathered by DJ BC. You can download the album at the Ziggy Stardust Remixed website. Prefixmag posted a review of the album, if you’re interested.
My take on the album? There is a lot of good stuff on there. Stardust Kids is hands down the best song on the album. I’m going to blast it in my car with the windows rolled down at least once a day for the next two weeks. The other fun ones were Starman (ATOM’s Space Funk Journey), Soul Love (ATOM’s Pink Innards Mix), Easy Hypocrites, and Five Years (World Famous Audio Hacker’s Brainache Mix). But nothing else on the album touches Stardust Kids.

The portraits show the main characters of the movie, a few essential supporting characters, and a couple of bit players in costume. Among the bit players are a couple of actors dressed as David Bowie and Mick Jagger. This makes the second nod to Bowie in the film.
On a side note, when I saw Matt Frewer photographed as Edward Jacobi I finally realized that the actor that plays Taggart in Eureka is the same dude that plays the Trashcan Man in The Stand. Hello, I’m clueless. That’s the type of useless stuff that I usually know! I need to spend less time working and more time boning up on my pop culture knowledge. One day I’ll need to save the planet from an alien invasion by winning at a trivia game.
